Historical Note

Edward John Iddings was born in 1879 in Peru, Indiana, the eldest of the four children of J.B. and Mary Iddings. He was raised on his father's 350 acre farm. After spending a year and a half at Butler College in Indianapolis, he moved to Colorado where he worked on a dairy farm near Denver before entering Colorado Agricultural College from which he received his B.S. degree in 1907 and his masters degree in 1922. On June 24, 1908 he married Maude Augusta Rowell. After working for the U.S. Department of Agriculture for several years he accepted a teaching position at the University of Idaho in 1910. In 1915 he was named Dean of the College of Agriculture and retained that position until his retirement in 1946. Following his retirement he moved to Menat, California where he died in 1954.

Content Description

The four scrapbooks cover the years 1904 to 1954. Three of the scrapbooks contain newspaper clippings on agriculture in general, agricultural education, the University of Idaho, and Dean Iddings; the fourth contains letters to and from the Dean dealing with his leave of absence and retirement. They are:

Clippings on agriculture, Dean Iddings, the university, and handwritten notes, possibly for speeches, 1917-1946.

Correspondence with University President Harrison C. Dale and others concerning Idding's leave of absence and retirement, 1944-1946.

Clippings on Dean Iddings, university personnel, speech notes and programs for agricultural events, 1904-1947.

Correspondence, including a letter from Ezra Taft Benson (December 8, 1952), membership cards, clippings on agriculture and the university, 1918-1954.

The 160 lantern slides (3 duplicates) register images of an international trip by Dean of the College of Agriculture E.J. Iddings and his wife Maude Rowell in 1927. Iddings took a sabbatical leave from June to December to study agricultural practices abroad. He visited Great Britain and overseas dominions of the British Empire, including New Zealand, Australia, India, Ceylon, and Egypt. Other European countries in the tour included Germany, Denmark, Netherlands, Switzerland, France, and Italy. The images depict agricultural practices in the countries they visited, along with scenes of the cities, buildings, transportation, and people. In that occasion he participated as a delegate to the International Rotarians Convention in Ostend, Belgium. It may be that a few slides are not from this trip, but they are related to agriculture.

Included in this collection are also a 4 ¼ x 4 ¾ x 15 inch wood lantern slide case and six cardboard boxes from the manufacturer of the lantern slide plates.

The scrapbooks were numbered by an unknown person; there is no apparent arrangement to the material within each book.

The lantern slides were not identified and in no order that could allow their grouping by country or subject. They are arranged in numerical order.

Acquisition Information

The scrapbooks of E. J. Iddings were donated to the University of Idaho Library by the University of Idaho President's Office in July 1973. The lantern slides might have been donated in conjunction with the scrapbooks.
