Historical BackgroundReturn to Top
At the beginning of the 20th century, Mt. Rainier became the United States’ fifth national park, drawing crowds of curious sightseers and adventurous campers to explore meadows, waterfalls, and mountain landscapes. The public could hire services which included saddle horses, guided tours, tents for camping, and lodge accommodations at Longmire's Hotel. Paradise Park quickly became not only a destination, but a base of operation while Longmire’s Hotel had the benefit of location off the only road going into the park, Mountain Road. Visitation spiked in 1915 when travel to Europe was halted by World War I. New technology at the end of the 19th century in the form of the automobile also contributed to the amount of visitors the park received in the early years. Visitors came on foot, horseback, automobile, and coach to enjoy Rainier.
