Historical NoteReturn to Top
The release of Nelson Mandela from prison and his subsequent run for the presidency of South Africa ended the era of aparteid in that country. The victory of the African National Congress party in 1994 assured the end of white dominance in the country and Nelson Mandela wisely encouraged a peaceful transition throughout his presidency (1994-1999).
