Historical Note

Harry Elmer Barnes taught economics, sociology and history at various colleges and universities, including Harvard, Columbia, Smith, Amherst, Temple, Colorado, and the New School for Social Research from 1918-1955. He was with the editorial department of Scripps-Howard newspapers from 1929-1940 and was a consultant on criminology and penology to federal and state government agencies. A noted revisionist historian, Barnes questioned conventional views of orthodox religion and the origins of World War I, and opposed the entry of the United States into World War II. He wrote numerous books and articles, lectured widely, and corresponded with numerous individuals in his various fields of interest.
