Biographical Note
James Sayre Sandoe was born September 13, 1912 in Alameda, California and died May 29, 1980 in Lincoln, Nebraska. Sandoe received his education at Stanford, Colombia and the University of California at Berkeley. Sandoe married Julia Anne Caldwell in 1938 and the two had four children together. James later married Mary Ann Brown in 1966.
He was a noted mystery story critic for the New York Herald Tribune. From 1936 until his retirement in 1975, he was Purchasing Librarian and later a professor at the University of Colorado at Boulder. Sandoe was very interested in literature, as he was a mystery novel critic who edited short stories and was honored with the Edgar Allen Poe award from the Mystery Writers of America for his excellence in critical commentary.

Content Description
This collection consists of correspondence (principally with Harper and Row), manuscript drafts and other materials related to James Sandoe's work compiling, editing and writing the introduction for an anthology of stories by Dorothy L. Sayers, Lord Peter (1972), featuring her character Lord Peter Wimsey. Included in the collection are two Penguin edition volumes of Sayers' stories, Lord Peter Views the Body and Hangman's Holiday.
