Historical NoteReturn to Top

A legislative enactment of 1890 founded Washington State University, originally called Washington Agricultural College and School of Science. Actual operation began in January 1892. The enabling act normally is used to date university events, and accordingly the 100th anniversary was observed in 1990.

A system of several committees had responsibility for the University centennial, while the Office of University Relations served as staff and coordinators. The principal coordinators, Dan Peterson and Sonia Hussa, maintained the records of the centennial activities and projects.

Records of Centennial matters are chiefly office correspondence, memoranda, reports and notes. Most records are the files of Dan Peterson and Sonia Hussa. Also included are a number of videotape recordings of centennial-related events. The arrangement reflects the amalgamation of records maintained by multiple individuals.

The media in the collection include standard 1/8" audio cassettes and 1/2" and 3/4" videotape with one Super VHS tape. They begin with the WSU 95th anniversary in 1985 and are dominated by centennial events in 1989 and 1990 on the WSU campus as well as public service announcements and commercial broadcasts about the centennial. The 1/2" videotapes are standard VHS except for the one SVHS that will play but with very poor quality on a standard VHS deck. The 3/4" tapes are all standard not SP Umatic on full-size cassettes and thus will play in a standard Umatic deck.

Acquisition Information

Records of University Centennial projects were transferred to the University Archives on several occasions between 1990 and 1995 (Accession numbers UA90-12, UA90-14, UA90-31, UA91-31, UA92-10, UA92-15, UA92-19, UA95-13). The various accessions were combined and the files were arranged and inventoried by April O'Reilly and Anna Vogt in Summer 1999. In 2011 eight videotapes (1/2" and 3/4") as well as seven audio cassettes were added to the collection; these media were separated from accessions UA 2003-02, UA 2006-07, and UA 2006-11 and processed by Susan Vetter.

The files were arranged and inventoried by April O'Reilly and Anna Vogt in Summer 1999.
