Historical NoteReturn to Top

Washington State College's Waller Hall opened in fall term of 1935 as the New Men's Dormitory, and was named in honor of former college Vice President Osmar Waller at the end of that year. It was expanded in 1957 by the addition of a fourth floor on each wing. It remained a men's dormitory for 80 years until closing at the end of spring term, 2015.

Content DescriptionReturn to Top

The collection consists of loose records relating to Waller Hall, as well as scrapbooks and loose photographs and slides. These were retained and managed by various students over a number of decades, and so the accumulation of materials was somewhat haphazard. Two scrapbooks received with the others were so deteriorated that they had to be dismantled, and those photographs are now interfiled in the loose photographs series.

Arrangement

Waller Hall papers and records comprise a first series, organized alphabetically by subject, with a few short chronological subseries within that. Following those are two chronological series: loose photographs and then loose slides. Concluding the collection are several scrapbooks and a few oversized items; the scrapbooks are ordered chronologically, and the other oversized items are placed with the scrapbooks so as to efficiently fit and store them.

Acquisition Information

These Waller Hall records had been maintained in that dormitory until it closed at the end of Spring term, 2015, at which point they were transferred to Washington State University Libraries' Manuscripts, Archives, and Special Collections (MASC) by Waller's "Duke of Windsor," Justin Niedermeyer. They were received on May 8, 2015 and retained as UA2015-06.

Future Additions

Please be aware that this is a preliminary collection description. We still expect a few additional small items to come in from Waller Hall, and so the collection list here may change slightly in the coming few months.

Processing Note

This collection was processed in June, 2015 by University Archivist Mark O'English.
