Historical Note

The firm of Naramore, Bain, Brady & Johanson began almost casually in the early 1940s in response to the need for building construction after the depression and the war. In Bremerton alone, the U.S. Navy wanted a whole new town built, and built fast. No one firm could take on the job, so three existing Seattle firms finally got together to do the job. William Bain had specialized up to then in domestic architecture; Floyd Naramore and Clifton (Doc) Brady were best known for schools; and Perry Johanson was interested in medical design. At first the collaboration was a matter of convenience but the association was too profitable to abandon so eventually the individual firms were disbanded. Examples of the firms projects are the Congregational Church in Seattle, the Bellingham Public Library, the Seafirst Tower, and the Kingdome.

Representatives of the firm, of the UW College of Architecture and Urban Planning, and of the UW Libraries Special Collections and University Archives and Manuscripts Divisions selected several projects as representative of the firm's work. For these as much documentation as can be located is to be preserved in the UW Libraries. The primary record series, drawings, and other graphic materials, are administered in the Special Collections Division. Textual materials are administered in the Manuscripts Section. For some of the projects selected initially very little textual material is available. Documentation on other still active projects may be presented to the Libraries at a later date.
