William Buckhout Greeley was a graduate of the Yale Forestry School and began his career in forestry in 1904. He was Chief Forester of the U.S. Forest Service from 1920-1928. He then became secretary-manager of the West Coast Lumbermen's Association. He died in 1955.

The collection consists of diaries, correspondence, articles, manuscripts and photographs.
Greeley's diaries, dated 1908-1918, provide coverage of the years when Greeley was in charge of District 1 of the Forest Service and when he was commanding officer of the Forestry Section, 20th Engineers, A.E.F. Typed transcripts are included.
Part of the correspondence covers affairs of the West Coast Lumbermen's Association, from 1946-1955, and releases and memos from the association are included. Also available is William Greeley's personal correspondence, covering dates 1930-1955, and Greeley family correspondence from 1917-1933.
Also included are manuscripts of Greeley's books, articles, and addresses. A biography of William B. Greeley by George T. Morgan is included in the collection and is based on the Greeley papers.
The photographs include prints and a transparency of Greeley, of firefighters and of other people.
