Biographical Note

Milan DeRuwe attended Washington State College in the early 1940s. He was assigned to duty in the United States Army in the spring of 1943 when his ROTC class was activated. At various locations in the United States until October 1944, he then was assigned to the European front. From that time until June 1946 his activities took him around England, France, Belgium, and Germany. He was in both front and rear lines during the last months of the war, and then spent over a year with various duties in the occupation force and in England.

Content Description

The papers consist of letters from Milan DeRuwe to Bernadine Sawins. The principal content is DeRuwe's descriptions of what he saw and experienced as a junior officer in the European War and during its immediate aftermath. The earliest letters are from August 1944 and the latest from June 1946.
