Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Lawrence J. Golicz attended Washington State University in the 1960s, completing his Master's degree in History in 1968, researching the history of WSU's Holland Library. He completed his Ph.D in 1973 at the University of Maine.

Historical NoteReturn to Top

WSU's Holland Library opened in 1950. The previous library, located in Bryan Hall, had lacked sufficient space both for library materials and for students to study and work.

Content DescriptionReturn to Top

The collection consists of eight audio interviews (two with the same individual), as well as commentary on memoranda of G. Donald Smith. The interviews were all conducted by Lawrence Golicz in 1967 while working on his Master's in History thesis. They discuss the funding and creation of Washington State University's Holland Library. The interviewees were all either members of the Library Committee (Avery, Deutsch, White), or the Board of Directors of the Friends of the Library (Thompson), or otherwise in significant campus administrative positions.

The audio is on 17 1.5 mil. 3 inch acetate reels of audio cassette tape (commonly referred to as 1/4" reel-to-reel tape). Each tape is double-sided, and should have 15 minutes recording capacity per side. Longer interviews were recorded on multiple tapes.
