Biographical NoteReturn to Top
Hans Adolph Bendixen was born in 1894 in Hamburg, Germany. He immigrated to the United States in 1912, and received his Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees in 1919 and 1920, respectively, both from Iowa State College. Bendixen served as an Assistant and later Associate Professor of Dairy Husbandry at University of Idaho from 1920 to 1927. In 1923, Hans married Ruth Locke, a primary school teacher from South Dakota who taught in South Dakota, Idaho, and Minnesota. Bendixen then came to Washington State College where he developed the WSC Institute of Dairying and served as a Professor of Dairy Science from 1927 to 1959. From 1932 to 1933 Bendixen studied dairying at the University of Kiel, Germany, as a Oberlaender Trust fellow. He then received his Doctorate of Philosophy in Dairy Bacteriology at Iowa State College in 1937. He returned to Germany for further research during his career, including a 1959-1960 Fulbright scholarship. Bendixen served as the president of the American Dairy Science Association in 1952. According to an oral history collected by the Whitman County Historical Society, Bendixen won the contest for naming Cougar Gold cheese.
Content DescriptionReturn to Top
The Hans Bendixen Papers consists of materials generated from Bendixen’s research, his involvement in the Pullman community, and his attempt to draft his autobiography. The bulk of this collection concerns Bendixen’s research in dairy sciences. These files include Bendixen’s publications, many of which are on butter, materials from professional associations and conferences, notes on the history of dairy, and photographs from his work at Washington State College and various professional organizations supporting dairy research. The collection also contains documents about Bendixen’s involvement with the Pullman community, including documents from the Community Council on Aging, as well as yearbooks for the Exodus bridge club. In addition, the collection includes documents from a goodwill delegation to the Soviet Union of which Bendixen was a part. Finally, the collection contains dozens of film reels from his travels, notably, 16mm film from his travels to Germany in 1932 and 1937, the latter related to an International Dairy Federation Conference in Berlin.
