Historical NoteReturn to Top
Washington State University's library began, in conjunction with the opening of the college, in 1892. The library has been housed in the "Crib," the first University building; Old College Hall; the Administration Building (now Thompson Hall); Bryan Hall and other locations on campus. With the opening of Holland Library in 1952 for reader use, the Social Science Divisional Library was created. The Social Science Library included reference, periodicals, documents, reserve books, pamphlets, maps, and microfilm, as well as general books in the social sciences. It was located on the Second Floor of Holland Library. From 1976 to 1978 the Humanities and Social Science Divisional Libraries were merged in phases to become Holland Public Services.
Chiefs of the Social Science Library have been: 1955-1959 Clarence Gorchels, 1959-1961 Suzanne F. Chaney, Acting Chief, 1961-1962 Cecil Roberts, 1962-1968 George Rausch, 1968-1974 Eleanor Naffizger, 1975-1978 Pauline Lilje.
