Biographical NoteReturn to Top
Carla Bley (1936-), born in Oakland, California, is an American jazz composer, pianist, organist and bandleader. Bley was a central figure in the free jazz movement of the 1960s and is particularly well known for her jazz opera Escalator over the Hill. In 1964 she helped organize the Jazz Composers Guild. Throughout her musical career, Bley has worked with, and arranged and composed music for, a wide range of artists. Bley continues to record with her own big band.
