Historical NoteReturn to Top
The origin of the Department of Home Economics can be traced to Montana State University's founding curriculum. In 1893, Montana State College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts incorporated the field emphasis of domestic economy into the curriculum in order to provide young women a liberal education with a scientific basis and to train them in the science, management, care of the home, as well as to be teachers of home science. Course listings in ' home economics' ceased in 1998.
Over the course of the department's history the name changed from 'domestic economy' to 'domestic science' to 'home science' to ' home economics.' The Colleges or Divisions that provided a home to the department changed over time; these include the College of Household and Industrial Arts, Division of Household and Industrial Arts, Division of Household and Applied Arts, Division of Professional Schools, College of Professional Schools, College of Education, and College of Education, Health and Human Development. Despite the changes the department provided a unique combination of academic disciplines that included humanities and fine arts; social sciences; agricultural, behavioral and biological sciences; engineering, earth and physical sciences drawing knowledge from each and combining its own research and experiences in the field to improve individuals and families.
