Biographical Note

Frank G. Fox was an engineer born November 9, 1889 who fought in World War I, operated a road construction business, Fox and Holz, in the 1920s, and worked on Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) projects, especially the Ginkgo Petrified Forest near Vantage, during the Great Depression.

Franklin George Fox, Jr. (1918-2002) was a World War II veteran, King County Master Gardener, and lifelong resident of the Pacific Northwest. He worked on Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) projects, including at Mount McKinley National Park in Alaska, during the Great Depression. On September 25, 1942, he enlisted in the Navy, and in June 1943 he boarded the USS Southern Seas, where he served as Chief Pharmacist’s Mate. On December 1, 1944, he was transferred to the destroyer escort USS Bebas, where he served until the end of WWII.

Content Description

Diaries (1918-1935), correspondence (1917-circa 1938), notes, time records, and related materials. Correspondence includes letters from Frank G. Fox to his wife from Fort Lewis, 1917. Frank G. Fox's World War I service is also documented by a diary he reconstructed in 1918.

Frank G. Fox, Jr.'s papers include over 300 letters from Frank G. Fox, Jr. to his wife Rosemary, sent while he was serving in the Navy during WWII; as well as 51 photographs and other family correspondence.
