Historical Note

The Mountaineers was founded in Seattle, Washington in 1906. The first president was Edmond S. Meany. Standing committees were appointed at that first meeting of the club to take over the work and organization of the two main activities, the local and annual outings. The number of standing committees grew with the increasing membership and interests of the club. Mountain climbing has been one of the major interests. In 1935 climbing classes were organized to teach the fundamentals of Mountaineering. The Mountaineers were the first organized group to develop skiing in the Northwest. There are branches in Tacoma, Everett, and Olympia.

Mountaineer Books was formerly called the Literary Fund Committee; changed to Mountaineer Books about June 14, 1978. By August 1978 the letterhead reads Mountaineer Books. Editorial Review Committee. On September 6, 1979 the Board of Trustees established Mountaineer Books. Books Management Board. The Editorial Review Committee's function is to select and oversee the content of the publications; business aspects of the publication program such as sales, advertising, accounting, etc. are supervised by the Books Management Board.
