Biographical Note

Harry E. McAllister was born in Seattle, Washington, on 8 October 1916. He graduated from Cashmere High School, Cashmere, Washington, in 1934. McAllister earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Education at Eastern Washington State College in 1941, specializing in mathematics and history. He obtained a Master of Arts degree in Economics from the State College of Washington in 1943. After serving in World War II, McAllister returned to the State College, in 1946, as an economics instructor. He earned a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Colorado at Boulder in 1950. McAllister continued as a member of the faculty at the State College of Washington (since 1959, Washington State University) until his retirement in June 1982. From 1949, McAllister served as a professor of economics and business administration. From 1964 to 1968, he was chair of the Department of Business Administration.

As a member of the WSU faculty, McAllister served on several committees and in many organizations. He was a founder of the Faculty Council, and local and state president of the American Association of University Professors. He was a member of the search committee for the dean of the School of Economics and Business in the mid-1950s; member of the search and, later, the inauguration committees for WSU president in the mid-1960s; and chair of the search committee for dean of the College of Economics and Business Administration in the mid-1970s.

Content Description

A major portion of the McAllister Papers consists of memoranda, correspondence, and other material on the Faculty Council, an organization established in the early 1970s to promote faculty causes, including salary increases. It also includes a selection of material pertaining to McAllister's years as president of the state conference of the American Association of University Professors. Finally, the collection includes McAllister's working files for the search process used to fill the vacant posts of dean of the School of Economics and Business, in the mid-1950s; the WSU presidency (and subsequent inauguration of Glenn Terrell), in the mid-1960s; and the dean of the College of Economics and Business, in the mid 1970s.

Administrative Information

Arrangement

The Harry E. McAllister Papers are arranged, in part, according to a numerical filing system in use during the 1970s in the College of Economics and Business. For the most part, this has been maintained. Occasionally, though, additional folders covering related topics, were interspersed in this series. Much of the collection was not arranged by this numerical filing system and was instead grouped by topic.

Acquisition Information

The Washington State University Libraries acquired the Harry E. McAllister Papers from McAllister in 1982 through Siegfried Vogt. They were accessioned as MS82-32.
