Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Franz Boas (1858-1942) was an anthropologist from Minden, Kingdom of Prussia (modern day Germany). He earned his doctorate in physics in 1881 and then went to North America to study indigenous cultures and languages. In 1887, he emigrated to the US and became the museum curator at the Smithsonian and later a professor of anthropology at Columbia University. He is known for being a strong opponent of ideologies of scientific racism that were popular at the time and for introducing the idea of cultural relativism.
