Biographical NoteReturn to Top
Dr. Andrew Lawrence Markus was a professor of Japanese language and literature at the University of Washington with a special interest in the literature of the Late Edo period (1781-1867). Beginning in 1982, Markus taught for four years at the University of Kansas, although he did not become an assistant professor until he received his Ph.D. in 1985. His courses included lower- and upper-level classes in the East Asian Languages and Cultures Department. Markus also served as college-wide freshman-sophomore curriculum advisor, 1984-1986, and on several departmental committees.
In 1986 Markus became an assistant professor in the Department of Asian Languages and Literature at the University of Washington, where he taught until his death in 1995. At the University of Washington, he continued to teach lower- and upper-level courses; he also directed independent studies. Markus was a member and sometimes chairman of a number of departmental committees. He was the departmental undergraduate advisor, 1987-1993, and graduate program advisor, 1993-1995. In addition to these duties, he served on Ph.D. supervisory and reading committees.
Markus's research in Late Edo period literature led to public presentations and participation in many conferences. He was a member of the American Oriental Society, Association for Asian Studies, Association of Teachers of Japanese, Early Modern Japan Network, and Sino-Japanese Studies Group.
Content DescriptionReturn to Top
The papers chiefly document Markus's teaching, research, writing, and personal letters. Course materials consist of lecture notes from some, but not all, of his classes at the University of Kansas and the University of Washington. There are no papers relating to advisory positions and committee work. Speeches and writings contain drafts and/or final versions of many of his writings. Conference materials are filed with the paper presented at the conference. Markus also kept a personal bibliography of his research work. About half of the bibliography cards were labeled by Markus to correspond to specific works. Includes coursework done at Harvard as well as unpublished manuscripts and personal letters.
