Historical Note

Newspaperman and public relations expert Edwin Elmore Dowell was born January 3, 1916, in Calgary, Canada. He attended the University of Washington in Seattle studying journalism and political science. He began his journalism career with United Press International in 1938, serving as a bureau manager and business representative in the U.S. and Canada and war correspondent with the Alaska Defense Command in Anchorage, Alaska.

Dowell entered the U.S. Army in 1942, serving in the North African and European Theaters of Operation. He became Officer-in-Charge and Executive Editor of the Army newspaper, Stars & Stripes, Germany Edition. After leaving the service, he worked for the European Edition of the New York Herald Tribune and was manager of the International Editions of Newsweek magazine. In 1951, Dowell was recalled to active duty in the Army and assigned to the Technical Publications Branch, Fort Monmouth, New Jersey. Between 1952 and 1958, Dowell worked for Standard Oil Company (New Jersey), Standard-Vacuum Oil Company, and Reynolds Metals Company in public relations positions.

In 1958, Dowell joined Kennecott Copper Corporation as director of public relations for its Western Mining Divisions in Salt Lake City, Utah. He moved to New York in 1968 as director of public relations for the Metal Mining Division, was later advanced to corporate manager of public relations, and then became director of public relations for the entire corporation. He returned to Utah in 1979 to head public relations for the newly organized Kennecott Minerals Co. During his tenure at Kennecott, Dowell served as a Brookings Institution Fellow in Public Affairs with the U.S. Department of the Interior in Washington, D.C. He studied operations of the department as a special assistant to Secretary of the Interior Stewart Udall for 5½ months in 1962. Dowell retired from Kennecott in 1981 following a stroke but held an advisory consultancy for five more years.

While serving in the Army, Dowell married Suzanne Pons of Lyon, France. They had four daughters. Edwin E. Dowell died January 5, 1997.

Content Description

The Edwin E. Dowell papers, 1934-1986, contain clippings, photographs, correspondence, and publications relating to Dowell’s notable career as a journalist and public relations director. Kennecott Copper Corporation materials include newspaper clippings about the Curtiss-Wright takeover attempt, the Peabody Coal Company divestiture, and the closure of the company’s Utah plant, which for 50 years was the state’s largest employer. There is also an outside study and report done on the company’s corporate image and poor internal communications problems.

Scrapbooks record Dowell’s career through clippings, photographs, and mementos. His time spent with the United Press as a Pacific War Zone correspondent includes the last picture ever taken of Will Rogers before his fatal crash near Point Barrow, Alaska. While bureau manager for the British United Press in Canada, Dowell covered the royal visit of the King and Queen of England to Canada in June 1939.

The clippings, photographs, and memorabilia Dowell kept during his time in the Army provide interesting documentation of D-Day in southern France and the liberation of Dachau concentration camp by the U.S. Army’s 3rd Infantry Division. Also included is a set of official death photos of the Nuremberg trial Nazi war criminals. Three volumes document the history of the U.S. Army’s newspaper, Stars and Stripes. They are: A Short History of the Stars and Stripes: Germany Edition; Stripes: The First Five Years of the GI’s Newspaper; and a bound run of the papers dated October 1, 1945 through January 21, 1946.

Other scrapbook items include clippings on Standard Oil Company’s Antwerp, Belgium, Refinery opening in 1953 and the “People-to-People” Strategic Minerals Delegation to South Africa in 1983. There are three published articles written by Dowell: At Our Side in Italy…Fighting Frenchman; It’s Your Government; and The Crisis in Communications. On a personal note are clippings about Dowell’s Brookings Institution Fellowship, his election as Rocky Mountain District Chairman of the Public Relations Society of America, and his receipt of the Legion of Honor, the highest degree and honor of the Order of DeMolay.
