The Baldwin Sheep and Land Company was established in 1873 by Dr. David M. Baldwin at Hay Creek, Oregon. Located in present-day Jefferson County, the company became one of the state's largest producers of wool and purebred sheep. The company ceased operation in 1910. The Hay Creek Ranch continued stock-raising operations at the same location under different ownership. Collection includes a record book with minutes, titles, agreements and mortgages; and mortgages, leases, contracts, and other legal papers regarding land holdings near Madras and Hay Creek, Oregon.

Historical Note

The Baldwin Sheep and Land Company was established in 1873 by Dr. David M. Baldwin at Hay Creek, Oregon. Located in present-day Jefferson County, the company became one of the state's largest producers of wool and purebred sheep. John Griffith Edwards later became the manager and principal owner. The company ceased operation in 1910, when livestock grazing on public lands was curtailed to prevent overgrazing. The Hay Creek Ranch continued stock-raising operations at the same location under different ownership.
