Biographical Note

Carl J. Heinrich was born on December 23, 1889 in Southington, Connecticut. He attended schools both in Connecticut and Wisconsin. Heinrich married Ruth Hurd in Chicago on September 4, 1913, and they had four children: George, John, Ruth, and Carleen.

The Heinrich family moved to Roundup, Montana where they operated Heinrich Furniture Company from 1924 to 1931. In 1931, the family moved again to Missoula, Montana where Heinrich operated Heinrich Floral Company and Heinrich Jewelry Company until his retirement in 1955. Ruth and Carl Heinrich were also stockholders in the Standard Furniture, Inc. They both remained involved in the management of Standard Furniture, Inc. until its bankruptcy and dissolution in 1956.

Heinrich was very active in the Navy League in Montana and nationally. He served as the Montana State Vice President of the Navy League in 1942. He was also an active member of the Western Shrine Club where he served as President, and belonged to the National Advisory Council of the American Retail Jewelers Association, BPOE Hellgate Lodge No. 383, the Rotary Club, the Oddfellows Covenant Lodge No. 6, and the Masons. Heinrich also served as a deacon in the First Presbyterian Church in Missoula.

Carl J. Heinrich died on January 18, 1979 in Mesa, Arizona.

Materials relate to American National Retail Jewelers Association, George Heinrich, Heinrich family, Heinrich Furniture Company, Heinrich Jewelry Company, John Heinrich, Navy clippings, Navy Day (statewide and national), photos, and Standard Furniture, Inc. The bulk of the collection consists of Navy Day Correspondence and business records related to Standard Furniture, Inc. Materials regarding the Heinrich Furniture Company, Heinrich Jewelry Company, and personal correspondence are limited.

The chain of ownership of this collection is not documented.

Acquisition Information

This collection was given to the Archives in 1967. The donor is listed as Heinrich Jewelry.

Processing Note

This collection was probably first arranged in the early 1970s and the actions of the original processor are not documented, although the collection was organized into the existing series at that time. The collection was originally titled the George Heinrich papers, but was renamed the Carl J. Heinrich papers in 2012 to better reflect the creator and provenance of the materials.
