Historical Background
Later called the Cascade Tunnel, the Great Northern Railway Eight-Mile Tunnel is located in the Cascade Range of Washington, at Stevens Pass. The Burlington Northern & Santa Fe Railway owns and operates the tunnel that they built to secure protection from avalanches and eliminate the cost of maintenance on the track. Tunnel construction started in January 1926 at three locations: Scenic on the west slope of the Cascade Mountains, Berne on the east slope, and Mill Creek valley in the middle. At Mill Creek, a 622-foot vertical shaft was dug, two and a half miles from the east portal. Construction was completed in January 1929.
