Historical NoteReturn to Top
The Oregon Railway and Navigation Company began in the 1860s and officially incorporated in 1879. It operated a rail line between Portland, Oregon and eastern Oregon and Washington states. On July 16, 1896, the company reorganized as the Oregon Railroad and Navigation Company. After first leasing some lines from the company in 1887, Union Pacific purchased a majority stake of Oregon Railroad and Navigation Company in 1898. In late 1910, the line became a subsidiary of Union Pacific under the name of Washington-Oregon Railroad and Navigation Company. The company was fully absorbed by Union Pacific in 1936.
The railroad was represented by the Bogle firm (in various forms of name) in Seattle.

Scope and Content: Six books with calf bindings related to the Oregon Railroad and Navigation Company. Five of the volumes contain lists of daily records of materials loaded and unloaded by the Oregon Railroad and Navigation Company. Each volume measures approximately 4.5 inches by 7 inches and contains approximately 90 pages. Books number 1 through 5 belonged to R. W. Fletcher, an engineer from Pendleton, Oregon, who worked in the Bridges and Building department of the company. Book number 1 contains information about the route from Portland to Troutdale, from Cascade Locks to Dalles, and from Pendleton to Huron. Book number 2 describes Huron to North Powder. Book number 3 contains information about the route from North Powder to Huntington. Book number 4 logs the route from The Dalles to Barnhart, and book number 5 describes Barnhart to Pendleton.
A sixth volume, of the same size and binding as the other five, contains simple lined sheets instead of the official "record of material" pages in the other volumes.
