The Faculty Council was formed in 1972 as a voluntary association with the purpose of representation on the faculty of Washington State University. The organization generally focused it efforts on such matters as pay rates and other policies related to employment as a member of the university faculty. In 1982 the organization was renamed the Faculty Association, chiefly to avoid having it confused with a similarily-named faculty committee.
