Biographical Note

Lucius Elliot Marple and his wife, Martha Thayer Marple moved to Seattle from Massachusetts in 1904. They raised five children, Elliot, Warren, Catharine, Richard and Marcia. Lucius Marple was born the first sibling on July 25, 1868 in Boston, Massachusetts to William Warren Marple and Susan Tracy Marple. He attended Harvard University twice, finally graduating in 1899. He worked as an electrical engineer, journalist, street railway manager, and school teacher before meeting Martha. Martha Folsom Thayer Marple was born the middle of three sisters on March 31, 1870 in Winchester, Massachusetts to Samuel Hillard Folsom and Catharine Abbot Cram. She attended Smith College, graduating in 1892. She was a teacher when she met Lucius around 1902. Lucius built many of their houses and furniture. They lived in at least ten different residences from 1904-1921, including in West Seattle, on a farm in Pleasant Valley, in Interbay, on Magnolia Bluff, in Queen Anne, Brighton Beach, and Merrimount.

Warren Marple was born May 17, 1905 in Seattle. He attended University of Washington and Harvard for undergraduate studies, and Northwestern University for graduate studies in public utility economics. He worked as an instructor in economics at the University of Buffalo, for the Illinois Commerce Commission, and Bonneville Power Administration in Portland Oregon. He married Lorna Johnson in 1931, they had one daughter and two grandchildren. Warren died in 1992.

Elliot Marple was born February 12, 1908 in Seattle. He attended University of Washington and Harvard University and became a business journalist. In 1949 he began his own business newsletter, Marple's Business Roundup. The newsletter’s name changed to Marple's Business Newsletter in 1974. He married Dorotha E. Lyman in 1934, they had two children and six grandchildren. Elliot died in 2001.

Catharine Marple was born May 14, 1909 in Seattle. She attended University of Washington and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston Massachusetts as a sculptress. She participated in an exhibition at Seattle Art Museum, opened a kindergarten, and help many leadership roles in women’s’ organizations. She married Carl E. E. Webber and had three children and twelve grandchildren. She died in 1983.

Richard Marple was born October 16, 1910 in Seattle. He attended Pomona College and University of Washington. He worked for Gwin, White & Price marketing apples, and became the secretary of the heads of foreign sales. He served as second lieutenant in the Army Quartermaster Corps Reserve. He married Marjorie Turner in 1938 and had one child and one grandchild.

Marcia Tracy Weston Marple was born September 3, 1912 in Seattle. She graduated University of Washington in 1935, and attended Radcliffe, Harvard, and Mills College for graduate studies. She was an exchange student for a year on scholarship at Kobe College in Japan researching Japanese Art. She served in the Women’s Army Corps as a recruiting officer, and saw duty in London and Paris. She was involved with Seattle Art Museum, Wichita Art Museum, Asian Decorative Arts Museum, Atheneum Music and Art Library, and Fairfax Commission on the Arts. She married Eyvinn H. Schoenberg in 1944, had two children, and three grandchildren.
