Historical Note

Washington State University's School of Music was established in 1901. WSU's High School Summer Camp was started in 1933 by Fine Arts Dean Herbert Kimbrough. It eventually expanded to include non-music fields including journalism, speech, drama, and art. Each Camp lasted four weeks (mid-June to mid-July); while the first camp was only 40 high school students, by the mid-1960s it had grown to over 300.

Administrative Information

Arrangement

The collection is organized in two series, the first being Papers and the second being Photographs and Slides. Each series is organized by subject, with folders within each subject being organized either by sub-topic or chronologically, as aappropriate. The final box of photographs is a separate chronological series of photographs originally from WSU's Offices of Printing and Publications.

Acquisition Information

These music department records were transferred to Manuscripts, Archives, and Special Collections in two accessions. UA1988-36 was donated by Howard Deming on Oct. 31, 1988, and UA1988-41 was donated by Hiram Perez on Nov. 9, 1988. In 2017, a 12" record album was donated to MASC by the University of Manitoba Archives and Special Collections, and added to this collection (folder 14.5).

Processing Note

Preliminary processing of 1988-41 was done by Whitworth College student Linnea Nelson in the summer of 2009. Processing of the collection was continued by University Archivist Mark O'English in fall of 2009 and completed in December, 2010, at which time 1988-36 was incorporated.
