Historical Note

Van Duzee family ancestors settled in New Amsterdam before 1638. Ira Abraham Van Duzee (1798-1879) lived at various times in Gouverneur and Buffalo, New York and Swanton and St. Albans, Vermont. He had children William Daniel and Eliza Julia by his first wife. Ira and his second wife, Mary Ann Perrigo Ryan had sons Alonzo John and Edward Maddock. Eliza married Newton Higbee in 1848 and began the migration of various famiy members to Dubuque, Iowa. In the 1850s Ira, Mary Ann, Edward and Alonzo all came to Dubuque. Edward married Carolyn "Carrie" Jones in 1859, and Alonzo married Emily Asenath Perrigo.

When the Civil War began, Edward Van Duzee joined the 12th Iowa Infantry and was taken prisoner at the Battle of Pittsburg Landing (Shiloh), Tennessee in 1862. Alonzo joined the 44th Iowa Infantry as quartermaster in 1864. Edward became a lawyer and banker, and eventually settled in St. Paul, Minnesota where he died in 1916. Alonzo was admitted to the Iowa bar in 1870 and became a notary public in 1882.
