Historical NoteReturn to Top

The Maximum Gas Mileage Vehicle (MGV) Project, also referred as High Mileage Vehicle Project, was developed by E. Paul Cass and a group of students from the Mechanical Engineering Department. The Project entered two contests, the Fifth Annual Super Mileage Competition sponsored by the Western Michigan Section of the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), held in June 1984 in Marshall, Michigan and the First Annual West Coast Super Mileage Competition sponsored by the Northern California Section of the SAE, held also in June 1984 in Sacramento, California. The goals of the Maximum Gas Mileage Vehicle Project were to design an 11-ft, 70-lb, 1000-mpg vehicle, powered by a 2.0-hp Briggs and Stratton engine (donated by the Eaton Corporation). For lack of financial resources the group had to cancel their participation in the competitions.
