Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Microbiologist, b. 1921, d. 1990. Dr. Whiteley received her Ph.D from the University of Washington in 1951. She was a Research Associate and Research Professor of Microbiology at the University of Washington from 1953 to 1965 and a professor of Microbiology from 1965 until her death in 1990. She was active in the American Society for Microbiology and chaired its Publications Board from 1980 to 1990. Her research focused on control of viral transcription in Bacillus subtilis phages, properties of RNA polymerases, and on cloning and expression of the crystalline protein gene of Bacillus thuringiensis.
