Historical NoteReturn to Top
The library at Central Washington University acquired and collected audio tapes and cassettes as educational materials as early as the 1950s. The vast majority of these recordings were mass-produced by private firms and state and federal agencies. However, the library also collected audio recordings of significant addresses, lectures and interviews deemed historic to the college and region.
Content DescriptionReturn to Top
The audio tape collection also contains commencement addresses, building dedications and presentations on the history of Central Washington University and central Washington state. Included in the tapes are lectures by Timothy Leary when he visited the campus in 1967, the resignation speech of university president James E. Brooks in 1976, and the Pacific Rim Conference held on campus in 1989.
Historical BackgroundReturn to Top
Central Washington University began as the Washington State Normal School in 1891. In 1937, the school was rechristened the Central Washington College of Education. In 1961, the school became Central Washington State College and, finally, in 1977, Central Washington University.
