Biographical NoteReturn to Top
Arthur M. Churchill was born in September 1876 in Marinette, Wisconsin. He studied at the University of Wisconsin and George Washington Law School. After practicing law in Washington, D.C., he moved to Portland, Oregon, in 1911. After retiring from legal practice, Churchill purchased a dairy farm on Puget Island, Washington, which he operated for the rest of his life.
Churchill married Grace M. Walsh in 1921. The couple had three sons: Arthur, Jr., John, and Donald. Churchill was active with the Portland City Club, the Multnomah Athletic Club, and the Portland Committee of Foreign Relations. He also frequently wrote letters to the editor of the Oregonian newspaper, where among other stances, he criticized American aid for Israel and opposed statehood for Hawaii. Churchill died in February 1956.
