Historical Background

Ketchikan was incorporated into a city in 1900 with a population of 800. Today, Ketchikan is the fifth most populous city in Alaska with over 14,000 residents. Ketchikan started as a single salmon cannery and soon grew from the mining and timber industries. Ketchikan was considered the "Salmon capitol of the World" by the 1930s. Now, most of the economy comes from tourism. Ketchikan is also known for having the world's largest collection of standing totem poles from the Tlingit, Haida, and Tsimshian nations.
