Historical NoteReturn to Top

Raymond Gatlin was born August 29, 1911 in Mobita, Texas. As a child he moved to Colorado, and in 1920 to Milan, Washington. After graduating high school he started training as a baker for Model Bakery in Spokane. He married Helen Birge, on December 24, 1935 in Colfax, WA. Later Gatlin became the manager of Boges Bakery in Spokane. In 1949, they moved to Moscow, ID and opened the Sugar 'N Spice Bakery. In 1956, he opened another bakery in Pullman, WA and ran both until 1966. Afterwards, he went on to work at the bakery in the Rosauers grocery store in Pullman, retiring in the late 1970s. Raymond Gatlin died December 26, 1993.

Gatlin's son, Phillip, and daughter, Linda, graduated from Moscow High School. Linda attended the University of Idaho and was a member of the Kappa Alpha Theta sorority.

Materials in this collection include personal papers from the Gatlin family, as well as some business records for Sugar 'N Spice Bakery. Contracts in the collection pertain to both residential properties and business. Also in the collection is an accounts book from Sugar 'N Spice Bakery.

The personal papers include photographs of Linda and Phillip Gatlin primarily from their school years, as well as their classmates (with notes written on them). There are also a few other family photographs. Also, included are memorobilia from Linda's time as a part of the Kappa Alpha Theta sorority, these include dance cards and a pledge book. Also among Linda's materials are two diaries and an autograph book with notes from friends.

Other family papers include genealogy research of the Gatlin family, including items from their Family Bible.
