Biographical NoteReturn to Top

Alfred E. Saylor (1847-1912) was a migrant to Oregon who served as surgeon general of the Oregon State Militia (later the Oregon National Guard). One of his sons, Edgar Alfred Saylor (1881-1953) was a cigar-maker who lived in Portland, Oregon. Charles A. Saylor (1918-1974) was the son of Edgar A. Saylor. He served in the Oregon National Guard in the late 1930s and early 1940s. During World War II, he fought in the Pacific Theater with the 162nd Infantry Regiment. After the war, he worked for the City of Portland in the Department of Public Works and the Bureau of Sewage and Waste Disposal.

The collection consists of the Saylor family's papers, including family photographs and genealogical information. The collection also contains photographs, publications, and ephemera specifically relating to Edgar A. Saylor and Charles A. Saylor, including a yearbook and photographs from Charles A. Saylor's service in the Oregon National Guard. Other items of note include the 1876 publication "Keim's Illustrated Handbook of Washington and Its Environs," which most likely belonged to Alfred E. Saylor.
