Historical Note

Jerry S. Dixon (b. 1948) excels in many outdoor sports including kayaking, hiking, and skiing. He has written several books and articles pertaining to his adventures. Now retired, Dixon is an environmental and educational activist. He has endowed a lecture series in philosophy at the University of Utah and has received many grants for environmental education in Alaska. The Jerry S. Dixon Award for Excellence in Environmental Education is awarded to people involved in education in Alaska who demonstate a dedication to wilderness conservation.

The Jerry S. Dixon papers (1971-2009) contain journals, scrapbooks and correspondence which catalogue Dixon's travels and adventures throughout Alaska and the world. Dixon's environmental and educational interests and activities are discussed in his correspondence as well as in newspaper clippings and magazine articles.
