Historical NoteReturn to Top

Washington State University has offered various fields of engineering instruction since the earliest days of the college. On January 1, 1946, the Washington State Institute of Technology was established by the Board of Regents to combine them all into one administrative department. The Institute included the College of Engineering, the School of Mines, the Division of Industrial Research, and a Division of Industrial Service. The Institute was reorganized in July l966 and became the College of Engineering with academic departments, a Research Division and a Technical Extension Service.

Content DescriptionReturn to Top

The majority of the descriptive information presented below has been taken from the May 1975 Publications of the Institute of Technology, and may contain slight inaccuracies. Where MASC holds these items, they can be found in MASC's University Publications collection at WSU 158 and WSU 159 (note that the University Publications collection also holds items not on this list, and only holds most, but not all, of the items included on this list - this is a compilation of publications, not a list of holdings.). We have here updated the original list to include publications released after that date; omitted from this compilation is their listing of conference proceedings.

Arrangement

The materials are broken into seven series: Bulletins, Circulars, Engineering Experiment Station Bulletins, Highway Publications, Miscellaneous Publications and Brochures, Reprint Series, and Technical Report Series. The series are organized by their original numbering, which is loosely chronological.

Acquisition Information

The “WSU Publications” collections are an accumulation of materials transferred to Washington State University Libraries’ Manuscripts, Archives, and Special Collections on a nearly daily basis. Some items are transferred directly by the University’s printing department. Many other materials have been forwarded by the Library’s serials cataloging unit. Other items come directly from university departments, and a significant number of publications have been donated by individuals. Most materials in it have no accession records.

Processing Note

The "WSU Publications" collection is an effort to amass significant or representative publications of the University. The effort began in 1955. Until 1977, the publications were managed as part of the university archives. In that year, office records were separated from the publications in order to follow the spirit of the Washington State public records laws. The separation was all but complete; nonetheless, small quantities of non-published materials, records, remain among the WSU Publications. In 1970-1975, Library employees prepared a library card catalog for the WSU Publications collection. That catalog was transcribed and adapted by Tyler Evans and Jeff Zundel in 2005-2006. This particular series list was created by University Archivist Mark O'English in May, 2008.

Related Materials

While no list of them currently exists, Research Reports of the College of Engineering Research Division (previously the Division of Institutional Research) dating from 1960 to 1987 are held in MASC in the unprocessed UA1995-04 collection (31 boxes). Such reports will usually be identified as Research Report no. yy/aa-bbb, where yy is the two digit year, and bbb is a chronological numering within that year.
