Biographical Note

Mr. Otto Amen served as Washington State Representative from the 9th District for eight terms from 1967 to 1983. He was the Speaker Pro Tempore and a member of the committees of Agriculture, Rules, and Appropriations--General Government, as well as the Special Appropriations Subcommittee on General Government. He was the chairman of the Special Committee of Legislative Budget. He was educated at Washington State University in pharmacy, and then became a farmer by occupation. He was a resident of Ritzville, Washington, and actively involved in community activities. He was an active member of the Grange, the Farm Bureau, the Chamber of Commerce, and Washington Wheat Growers Association.

Administrative Information

Arrangement

The legislative papers of Otto Amen at the Libraries of Washington State University in 1985 consist of subject files, constituent correspondence, and various reports and enclosures. The majority of the documents are from Amen's final two terms in the Legislature, during the years 1979 - 1983. The papers are filed in the original order in which they were received. The papers are divided into three series according to time periods: 1. before 1979 (folders 1-80); 2. 1979 to 1981 (folders 81-196); 3. 1981 to 1983 (folders 197-360). Each of the series is further divided according to the topics. Papers before 1979 are divided into three subseries: Miscellaneous; Appropriations, and House Bills. Papers from 1979 to 1981 are divided into four subseries: Correspondence (arranged according to places of the correspondents first and then according to topics discussed); Bills sponsored by Otto Amen; Miscellaneous; Appropriation. Papers from 1981 to 1983 are divided in three subseries: Correspondence; Bills sponsored and Miscellaneous.

Acquisition Information

Papers of Otto Amen of Ritzville, Washington, former Member of the Washington State Legislature, were donated to the Washington State University Libraries in 1985 by Mr. Amen (Accession no. MS85-41).
