Biographical NoteReturn to Top
U.S. Naval Commander and author John H. Walsh (1879-1962) was born in Wisconsin. When he was a child, his family moved to Oakesdale, Washington, where he lived until 1896 when he left home to attend the new state college in Pullman, Washington (now Washington State University). He spent one year at the college, and then accepted an appointment to the United States Naval Academy, graduating in 1901. He later earned an M.S. degree in Naval Construction at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (1907). Walsh married Jessie McBride in 1906; they had been married for 56 years when he died in 1962.
In addition to his naval career, Walsh was the author of two published novels, Cam Clarke, set in Eastern Washington, and Glenwood of Ship Bay, along with many articles and a syndicated newspaper column.
