Incorporated in Colorado in late 1977 as the American Wilderness Alliance by Sally Ranney, Jerry Mallett, and Clifton Merrit, the organization was founded primarily to focus on the designation of wilderness, focusing on the protection of publicly owned wildlands, wildlife habitat, wetlands, free-flowing rivers, and associated fisheries. Around 1986, the organization relocated its headquarters to Montana. In September 1989, the Alliance was renamed American Wildlands to more accurately reflect the broader scope of its work. The group published a bi-annual magazine, Wild America, well as a newsletter, On the Wildside. American Wildlands was instrumental in passage of the Alaska Lands National Interest Conservation Act; wilderness bills in Colorado, Idaho, Wyoming and Utah; and the establishment of millions of other acres as wilderness in the West. The group's scientific and educational endeavors include resource economic studies as well as film and slide lectures on wilderness, wildlife, and wild rivers. American Wildlands worked to restore balance to the management of all renewable forest resources and wildlife passageway protection through such programs as the Timber Management Policy and Sustainable Forests Program as well as the Corridors of Life project. American Wildlands ceased operations circa 2011.

This collection contains corporate records pertaining to American Wildlands, an environmental group that was in operation from 1977 to 2011. It details the group's activities and administration over its thirty-four-year history as it worked to protect public wildlands and wildlife habits in the United States before closing in 2011. Its main focus was the proctection of wildlands and wildlife habitat in the Western United States, including passing wilderness legislation in various states. Examples of projects and areas worked on included the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem and grizzly bear Manganagement, wildlife corridors in the Northern Rockies, and Western Cutthroat Trout, among many others.

Arrangement

Collection is divided into four series: 1. Administrative Files, 2. Program files, 3. Legal Files and 4. Audio-visual Materials. In each series, folders are arranged alphabetically by folder title, except for a few items at the end of series 2 and 3.

Custodial History

Prior to donation to MSU, the items were held by the American Wildlands Alliance.

Gift of Peter Coppolillo, March 28, 2011.

Processing Note

Collection acquired without inventory. A box level inventory was undertaken, and then used as basis for identification and division of series, arrangement, and weeding of boxes. Publications were separated to be catalogued separately.Over the course of processing, collection shrunk from about 30 boxes to the 14 described in the finding aid. After initial processing, additional materials were found and added to the collection.

Photos and other audio-visual materials produced by American Wildlands, such as photographs of various wilderness sites and projects that American Wildlands worked to protect (For example, McArthur Lake, which is mentioned in multiple project files). Also has slides related to presentations organized by the group on wildlands studies, and events hosted by the organization such as the 25th Anniversary Conference in 2002. Formats in this series include: 35 mm slides, photographs, audio cassettes, compact discs and a VHS tape. All items and their content are identified on their folder title, which includes the name and location of the photos taken, or the content within.

Items in this series are grouped together by format, starting with the 35 mm slides. Slides and photographs are all numbered, and related items (such as for the 25th Anniversary conference) are grouped together and identified as such by their title. There is little formal arrangement to the other items in this series, but all are clearly identified.
