Historical Note

The Oregon Speak Out Project was founded in 1992 with the goal of helping to defeat Measure 9, a statewide anti-gay ballot initiative. The group trained gays, lesbians, and their allies on how to effectively communicate the importance of equal rights and protections for gays and lesbians in public settings and in one-on-one conversations. The group continued its work following the defeat of Measure 9 in November 1992.

Content Description

The bulk of the collection consists of records from meetings held by the Oregon Speak Out Project in early 1993, following the group's success in defeating Measure 9. At these meetings, the organization discussed which strategies had and hadn't succeeded in the 1992 election, as well as best practices and training for future action. Other materials in the collection include a No on 9 bumper sticker, e-mail correspondence and consent forms relating to an interview done for a thesis about the No on 9 campaign, and correspondence relating to the 1997 dissolution of a related organization, the Northwest Speak Out Project.
