This collection consists of papers kept by A.T. Schenck, project construction engineer, during the construction of Memorial Gymnasium on the University of Idaho campus. The collection also includes photographs taken by Schenck of the gym's construction as well as pictures of other buildings on campus and the construction of Arrowrock Dam on the Boise River around 1915.

This collection consists of papers kept by construction engineer A.T. Schenck during the building of Memorial Gymnasium on the University of Idaho campus. Included in the collection are correspondence between Schenck and the university, memos, daily field reports detailing construction progress and weather conditions and financial reports. This collection also includes photographs taken by Schenck of Memorial Gym's construction, other UI campus buildings and several photos of the construction of Arrowrock Dam on the Boise River.

Historical NoteReturn to Top

Memorial Gymnasium on the University of Idaho campus was constructed to honor soldiers from the university as well as throughout the state of Idaho who lost their lives during World War I. The building was designed by David C. Lang, University Architect and head of the Department of Architecture. He was assisted by Theodore Pritchard. Memorial Gym was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1977.

Acquisition Information

Photographs taken by A.T. Schenck of the construction of Memorial Gym, other buildings on the UI campus and construction of Arrowrock Dam were purchased by Special Collections and Archives, head Terry Abraham in 1989 from an historic photo and ephemera dealer located in Seattle, Washington.
