Historical NoteReturn to Top
When the California Gold Rush of 1848 died down, miners began to explore the rest of the West in search of more gold. By 1860 gold was discovered in Idaho, which was then part of Washington. By the summer of 1862, gold was found in Montana and parts of the Dakotas. The discovery of gold in the Coeur D’Alene Mountains in north Idaho in 1882 brought mining towns to parts of the region that were previously uninhabited.
Mining companies like the Idaho and Montana Gold Mining Company tried to profit from the boom. While it is unclear where the company’s mines were located, many of the shareholders were prominent citizens in Missoula, Montana. Among those shareholders were John Cornish (Fairchild, Cornish & Co. real estate), Charles E. Beckwith (insurance agent), and F.D. Low (Stoddard & Low real estate). Dr. Levi E. Holmes of Butte was one of the leading shareholders. Holmes served as a surgeon in the Civil War, and later established his practice in Butte in 1878.
