Biographical Note
Paul Pascal (1925-2015) was a Professor of Classics (later Emmeritus Professor) at the University of Washington for 38 years from 1952 to 1991. He was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, where he completed his primary education, before attending the University of Vermont for an undergraduate degree in classics. His studies were interrupted by World War II, during which he served in the army in the Philippines after being sent to learn Japanese at the University of Chicago. He ultimately finished at the University of Vermont in 1948 and later married his wife Naomi, whom he had met in New York during high school. The duo then moved to Chapel Hill, North Carolina to study with classics scholar B.L. Ullmann and write his dissertation. After spending a year at the American Academy in Rome through a Rome Prize Fellowship, Pascal earned his PhD and started a one-year appointment at the University of Washington, which turned into full multi-decade employment. After his retirement in 1991, he led tours in Rome and Italy as well as gave lectures in Changchun, China. On May 11, 2015, Pascal passed away at age 90.
