Historical NoteReturn to Top
The Northwestern Washington Research and Extension Unit, an agricultural research facility of Washington State University, was established in 1947 at Mount Vernon, Washington. A "Memorandum of Understanding" between W.S.U. and the Governing Board of the Northwest Agricultural Research Foundation, representing local interests, organized the administration of the facility. Skagit County provided land and the initial experimental plantings for the unit which by 1968 encompassed about 70 acres of land for research plots and 12,000 square feet of greenhouse space, as well as laboratory facilities for the departments of Entomology, Plant Pathology, Agronomy, and Horticulture.

Arrangement
The records of the Northwestern Washington Research and Extension Unit are arranged alphabetically by topic and chronologically within each topic, as per their original order. The records date from 1948 to 1973, but the bulk of the collection is from 1956 to 1969 and includes correspondence, bulletins, reports, research papers and drafts, and other papers. An original sub-unit of the filing system arranged correspondence concerning individual states and foreign countries under the heading "States and Foreign". The principal correspondents are Dr. Robert Alan Norton (b. 1926), Superintendent for the Northwestern Washington Research and Extension Unit beginning in 1962, and Dr. William Arthur Haglund (b. 1930), Assistant Plant Pathologist.
Acquisition Information
The records of the Northwestern Washington Research arid Extension Unit were transferred to the University Archives, Washington State University, in June 1976 (UA 78-22) by the unit in accordance with the approved record schedule.
Processing Note
The records were processed by Patricia M. Gourd in August of 1979.
