Biographical NoteReturn to Top
Herman Kenin (1902-1970) grew up in Portland and attended Reed College in 1930, then Northwestern College of Law, and was admitted to the Oregon Bar. He was a violinist, first with the George Olsen orchestra and then as a leader of his own band. In 1936, he was elected president of Portland's Local 99 of the American Federation of Musicians, and in 1943, he gave up his law profession to make a career as a union executive. He made many important advances for labor, earning him a place on Nixon's list of enemies.
