Biographical NoteReturn to Top
Seattle restaurant worker. Crofut, a Vermont native, described his train journey from Vermont to Seattle and his work as a cook in Seattle at the age of 22 as well as his jobs clearing land in Whatcom County in 1889. In June of 1889 as he was about to leave Seattle to return to Vermont, Seattle burst into flames with widespread destruction of the downtown area. Crofut recalled that day in a 1936 memoir.
