Historical Note

The Rural Women's History Project, sponsored by the University of Idaho Women's Center, was funded by a grant from the Association for the Humanities in Idaho in the amount of $15,556 in the Fall of 1974; an additional $10,000 was received the following year to continue the project. The project had three stages, interviews with rural women, dramatic presentations based on the interviews, and small group discussions, many of which resulted in more interviews. Presentations were given in over 20 communities in Latah, Benewah, Clearwater, Nezperce, and Shoshone counties, and over 100 women were interviewed. Those working on the project learned about the history of rural women's roles and their contributions to their families and communities. They also learned about the changes that have taken place in women's lives and how those changes affected how women felt about themselves and what concerned them about their families and communities. Project staff members included Corky Bush, Lenore Garwood, Lillie Hermann, Isabel Miller, Connie Kiesler, and Joy Williams.

Content Description

The papers of the Rural Women's History Project span the years 1975 to 1980, with the bulk of the material covering the years 1975-1976.

The papers include scripts for presentations, a notebook with photographs and an evaluation of the performance in Sandpoint in 1976, and information on other oral history projects. There are also many articles on rural women. The major portion of the material consists of transcriptions of the oral history interviews. The tapes for these interviews are also included. There are also photographs of the women interviewed.

Although there is a box for tape #2 the tape itself is missing, the same is true for tape #45. Also missing are tapes 30 and 31. These two tapes are not listed on the interview index so it is possible the recordings were of such poor quality the tapes were not kept by the project staff members.

Administrative Information

Arrangement

The material in this record group was in labeled folders when received, and all tapes were numbered. The original order was maintained throughout. Several items which were in notebooks, notably the Project Notebook and the original personal data sheets and photographs, were removed from the notebooks and placed in folders.

The first series consists of basic background information on oral histories and rural women, and includes questions used in the interviews, scripts for the characterizations used in the presentations, and several evaluations and reports on the project.

The second series contains transcriptions of many of the interviews done for the project. Included with the transcriptions are personal data sheets and an index to the tape recording. These are in alphabetical order.

The third series contains photographs and personal data sheets of the interviewees. These are also in alphabetical order. Also included are other photographs of the women and of the 1976 Sandpoint performance. There is one folder of negatives and contact prints.

The final series consists of tape recorded interviews; most are reel to reel, but the interviews conducted in 1980 are on cassette tapes.

Acquisition Information

The Papers were donated to the University of Idaho Library by Corlann "Corky" Bush between November 1984 and January 1986.
