Historical BackgroundReturn to Top
On July 30, 1942, the Women's Reserve of the U.S. Naval Reserve or the WAVES (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service) was created. The 86,000 WAVES who served during World War II performed clerical work such as storekeeping and stenography, but also became air traffic controllers, mechanics, and truck drivers. The majority served in the United States, with small numbers going to Hawaii and Alaska in 1944.
Content DescriptionReturn to Top
Photographs of WAVES barracks, mess hall, and quarters in Seattle, probably at Sand Point Naval Air Station. Includes one photograph depicting eleven WAVES and one man, possibly the members of a WAVES baseball team.
